under what conditions would you normally expect helpsvc.exe to start itself?

I was making out Christmas cards two days ago and had turned away from the
computer for a half hour, maybe an hour, and I heard the thing "churning" so
I opened task manager and saw helpsvc.exe using a great deal of memory.. that
has
never happened before. Usually when I hear it churning it is due to the
update on McAfee or something like that. This is a first.

It got up to 113,000 and then decreased by itself. I was not actually
working on the computer, but minding my own business.

strange. do I have the right category for this question?

The system checks for the need to do a background defrag when idle. Unless
you are seeing some 'external' activity, like svchost, I would not worry
about it.
