Soulfinger

I recently had XP Home on my PC & decided to upgrade to Vista Ultimate
X64 so I made sure all my programs would function on Vista first, all
was ok.

Then I made a back up off all my Very important files from My Documents
to my Slave Drive in the same PC Including Word 2007 Documents &
Pictures mainly Jpeg, Gif & Photoshop files (psd) which relate to my
Work.

Installed Vista (fresh install) no problem then installed programs
(Word, Photoshop) Then Placed My Pictures in Vista's Pictures Folder &
Documents into Documents folder. Then created a folder within documents
to tidy it up a bit, thought nothing of it.

Went back to my Slave drive and deleted my back up's as I thought it's
on the main drive all is ok. Later went back to Documents & the folder
had vanished they were all word documents.

I done a search, with no joy so then went to folder options at
unchecked view hidden files & system files but no Joy.

I know I didn’t delete this file where is it & can I recover it.

I then checked my Pictures that I had transferred and all was ok.
I then used several of these pictures from a sub folder with in a
folder in the "Pictures" folder with Photoshop and saved several
different files as psd files finished my work then shut down the pc.

I decided to make a change today to one of the files only to find the
folder in the "Pictures" folder including around 40 (Approx) were not
there including the folder with the files I had altered.

HELP! I really need these files back particularly the file I altered.

I have done a search for .psd with no joy.

I now realise after doing some google’ing! That Vista has a new file
system & new sharing security settings which I didn’t have time to
explore, might have something to do with it

At some point I switched to the theme Aero don’t know it that has
anything to do with it also used Vista Manager program (1click
maintenance) but didn’t notice any inconsistencies when using it.

(UAC) is turned off it was too annoying when installing new programs.

If anyone can help and or need any more information to help me
resolve this issue it would be greatly appreciate it.
THANKS.

Soulfinger,

Open an admin command prompt. Type dir /?
This will show you how to use the dir command. Try finding your files with
the command.

To start an admin command prompt, right-click the Command Prompt shortcut
(Start, Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt) and select "Run as
administrator".

Good luck.

I Know Lukan I have always done this but using XP for years and have
never lost any data. Expected the same from Vista .

Thanks for the reply Bob. I open an admin command prompt. Typed dir /c
(That's my main drive)

I get the Directories and the next command prompt is

C:\Users\Soulfinger>

I have tried typing Pictures after that & other variations but get the
message: “'Pictures' is not recognized as an internal or external
command, Operable program or batch file.”

The Files if they were there would be in

Pictures/-COVERS-/

Sorry! I rarely use Command Prompt could you advice me in what to type
to explore where the files might be.

THANKS Again.

I have just noticed a Text Document has went missing?
Done a search .txt.... No Joy!

it had been altered and saved a couple of days ago.

What the hell is going on here? is this Vista playing silly bugger's or
is a virus causing this?

Type cd\Users\Soulfinger\Pictures\-COVERS- (do you actually have the hyphens
as part of the folder name?) Press Enter
Type dir *.jpg. Press Enter

The result I get is:
A H
C:\Users\Soulfinger\Pictures\-COVERS-\desktop.ini
A SH C:\Users\Soulfinger\Pictures\-COVERS-\ethumbs.db

I honestly think Vista has just deleted or placed these files
somewhere.

I done a little experiment and created a folder in the Documents
folder
A Text, jpeg and a word Doc then took the jpeg and altered with
Photoshop and saved that in the same folder.

Created that a few days ago and it’s still there I really don’t know
where those other Word, Txt, Jpeg files have gone they must be on the
machine somewhere.

Appreciate the help.

Figured out why my folders & files where going A.W.O.L? It was to do
with the program Vista Manager.

When 1-click cleaner is used' which works great. The only problem is
that it thinks recently created folder's or documents are junk. The good
thing is when it performers this it moves the files to the recycle bin
which can easily be restored.

I REALLY wish I knew this a couple of weeks back. But hey sh*t
happens eh? Lol

If it deletes recently created folders what makes you think it works
great? Looks like a major flaw to me.

Yeah! I know what you mean. it's not the latest version of the program
maybe the later one has that problem solved.

The program was mentioned two posts up just scroll up and you would have
noticed it was Vista Manager.

Thanks for your post Bob regarding Registry cleaners. I will not use
that feature of the program I mentioned again and/or any other
affiliated programs.

You're welcome.

What you don't understand is you are posting from a horrible web interface.
Most if not all helpers in the Microsoft newsgroups use a newsreader (e.g.
Outlook Express, Windows Mail) and hide read messages.

What you don't understand is that by hiding read messages you are losing the thread.

I understand that very well. I also understand it's not my responsibility to
do so. The one seeking help is responsible for making it as easy as possible
for others to help him.

Then you are doomed to being constantly in the dark.

You recently replied to a post from a " peterwilo ".
The thread was titled "Re:error while opening MSCONFIG"
The thread was dated 24/03/08

As you probably won't be able to see it I quote some of it for you:

"Hey Bob
Apologies....the original poster did paste the error message and it was
there when I posted my question... I found this forum it by Googling the
error !...it appears to have disappeared overnight....however here it is
again

"A problem was encountered while processing the custom tools manifest
file (C:\Windows\system32\MSCFGTLC.XML). Please check the file for
errors and verify that all expected tools are displayed."

There are several posts on different forums regarding this issue.
However...the problem is resolved/solved "

To which you replied:

"Run sfc /scannow.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833
What good is an apology if you continue to not quote the message you are
replying to? Use a newsreader!"

I won't repeat the rest of the thread but you then denigrated him and told him :

"Since you display symptoms of Alzheimer's I will offer frequent reminders
for you on how to post."

All because you couldn't follow the thread.
So, you arrogant ****, go to your newsreader folder, delete the microsoft.public.windows.vista.general
database, download the messages again and read the thread in it's entirety.

Then you can apologize to Peter Wilkinson BSc (Hons Mar. E) M.Ed. PhD
..
