I am trying to update a machine with Windows Update and no matter how I get
to that page, it won't begin the update process 1) start/programs/windows
update 2) From a web page, tools/windows update 3) Microsoft.com, navigating
to windows update.

I was able to download Windows Defender, but it will not install.

I also tried to go the Help and Support from Start Programs to roll back the
machine under System Restore and that page will not come up.

I did install Spybot and was able to run that until it found no more problems.

Thanks in advance,

You cannot install some updates or programs: Go to:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;822798&Product=winxp

Also, try going to start/run, to type:
CLEANMGR

Your %TEMP% files may need to be deleted.

Thanks for the reply:

I cleared out all the temp files in both CLEANMGR and in Internet
Explorer/Internet Tools/Delete File & Delete Cookies.

I went to the link for updates. I do not recieve errors, I get a blank page.
When I try to install Windows defender (I was able to download it to the PC).
I get this error message:

The windows installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if you
are running windows in a safe mode, or if the windows installer is not
correctly installed.

I am not running in safe mode.

In looking for the %temp% folder I discoverd the search function does not
work either.

How to resolve Common Windows Installer Problems:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555175/en-us

The first link mentioned the deletion of the Catroot2 folder.

Mark,

I tried the renaming of Catroot2 folder. That didn't work. In fact the
service it says to stop wasn't running as well as many of the other servives
that my main PC is running. This may be the reason none of these suggestions
are working. I was unable to get any of the service to run. I get errors such
as the following for Windows Installer and System Restore Service

Could not start the windows installer service on local computer. Error 1068:
The dependancy service or group failed to start.

Since you can download, and run exe files, The Milicious Software Removal
Tool found on the Update page should find the services problem.
