I just added a much-needed hard drive to my computer. It is seen by the computer,
but not on the LAN on any other computer and not when looking on the LAN of the
computer it is on!!! In the past, it was a simple thing of removing the Firewall or
non-sharing, or something like that.
There's no need to remove/disable the firewall and you shouldn't except for
troubleshooting. Depending on the firewall used and your LAN setup you may have to
open a port and/or set the machines IP in the Trusted Zone of the firewall. As for
Windows (Ack!!!) firewall, at the least you need to make sure that File and Print
Sharing is set as allowed.
As for the drive you need to either Share it, a partition on it, or Map it.
Another thing that makes a difference is the flavor of XP used, both Home/Pro have
Simple File Sharing enabled by default, yet in order to change/disable it in Home you
need to do it in Safe Mode as an Administrator. Once disabled you will also see a
Security tab where you can set permissions.
Not this time. I have checked all of those things. It simply isn't there. But
one I added before was OK when I installed it. I took it out and put this one in the
exact same place as the other, smaller one, and it works fine, but won't show up on
the LAN anywhere, which is the main thing I got it for: to be used as storage on our
server. I couldn't find any help when Googling it. A couple of hours on that just
gave me stuff about sharing.
And Sharing or Mapping is what you want to do if you want other machines on your
LAN to gain access.
Where do I go from here?
Please provide your LAN setup, OS's/flavor, firewall products (software and/or
hardware), etc.
