GRE 47 pass-through and VPN connection reliability

Is there any way to ensure reliable establishment of a PPTP VPN connection
when (apparently) some I'net routers do not permit GRE packet passthrough? I
have been unable to remote into my home office reliably - I frequently
receive a "Verifying Username and Password..." message but do not connect .
Once I do get in, I look at the System log on the RRAS box - it detected the
connection attempts but warned that the problem was likely due to I'net
blockage of GRE packets. I suspect I am successful, once the routers
redefine the best path to my Public IP, but this is a somewhat random process
via RIP or OSPF (i.e., the luck of the draw).

I know people who use 3rd party VPN connectivity software and never seem to
have connectivity problems. If there is some RRAS configuration setting I
have overlooked that would eliminate or mitigate this very frustrating
problem, please enlighten me.

Yea, stop using cheap crap. Sorry for putting it that way, but that's
the truth.

Get yourself a devices that supports PPTP as an endpoint, like a DFL-
700, then you can PPTP into it and do what you want on your network.

I appreciate your honest opinion, but my connectivity problems would not be
resolved by different hardware if, in fact, the GRE packets are being blocked
by indeterminate I'net reouters.

How would the hardware you propose not be subject to the same kind of I'net
router blocking?
