Whenever I click the "shut down" button, my screen freezes. I can access the
task manager through ctrl-alt-del, and that's about it. The box showing me my
shut down options (standby, restart, shut down, hibernate) never comes up.
I'm running XP Media Center 2005, with the latest service pack. Thanks in
advance for your help!

Ok... what do I do if none of that works?

System recovery simply won't function, and when I try to restart my desktop
never loads. I don't have an XP disk (it came pre-loaded on my laptop), and I
think the troubleshooting that requires it is a bit beyond me.

Contact the manufacturer of the laptop for recovery disks or you may have a hidden
partition so that you can use recovery.
Alternative, take the laptop to a computer shop to have it fixed.

If not under warranty, take the laptop to a computer shop to have it fixed.
