Is there a way to make Windows Explorer open in "file manager" view by
default? i.e Folders on the left hand side, rather than File and Folder
Tasks etc

Jeff

Maybe it is just me but I don't understand what you want. What is a Folder
Task? Maybe instead of saying what you don't want, tell us exactly what you
want displayed in the left pane.

In Explorer, clicking the "Folders" button toggles the display on the left
hand side of the window below.

Normally, in XP the left pane has shortcuts in boxes titled File and Folder
Tasks / Other Places / Details

Click the Folders button and it changes to a list of folders (like you used
to get in Windows 3 File manager), and that's how I want it to appear all
the time.

Set it the way you want and then click Tools | Folder Options | View | Apply
to all folders.

I must lead a charmed life--I have never seen that great (NOT) feature
before. I can change to the one you rightfully detest, but I cannot get it
to save so my Explorer opens as you want yours to open. Try using the
classic folders view and see if that gives you what you want: Help file:
classic folders

Start - Program Files-Accessories-Windows Explorer, or make a shortcut to it
on your desktop. Always opens in folder tree view for me.
