File protection on multimedia hard disks

Hello !

Is there a solution for storing sound files on a multimedia hard disk and
not enabling the files to be retrieved ?
(for example, are there multimedia disks which enable crypting sound files,
yet allowing to listen to them, or software solutions)

Here is precisely our need : we are an association and we want to give our
members access to conferences and concerts by storing these on multimedia
hard disks which our members will be able to rent.
The audio content of the files are the property of the association (concerts
and conferences by members).
We should wish at least a symbolic protection of the files so that most
members, if not computer experts, cannot easily retrieve the files from the
disk.

All ideas will be highly appreciated !

Cheers

Jean-Marie

If they can't be retrieved, how are they going to listen to them.

There is "somewhat" a method. It "was" known a DRM (Digital Rights
Management???) where you would need to "sell" a "license" in order to
use "media files." The record industry was using this "type" of
protection but now most "medias" are now being "distributed" with
this type of protection (or "headache!")

You're going to *rent* hard disks? As in, people are going to have to pop
open their PC case and install a hard drive in order to view your content
(or use external USB hard drives...)

Also, I've never heard of any type of hard disk being specifically referred
to as a "multimedia hard disk".

I think you've gonna have to get the terminology right before anyone will be
in a position to give you the definitive answer you're looking for.
Otherwise we can all only speculate as to the exact hardware involved here,
which will ultimately drive the software solution...
