Just wanted to share my experiences while building my new computer:
Asus NCT-D Dual Xeon Mobo with FSB 800
2x Intel Xeon 2.8 GHz
2x 1 GB Kingston RAM DDR2-533 ECC reg.
Asus Extreme N6800 PCI-Express
2x 200 GB Maxtor S-ATA
Fortron PS with 460 W
Well, after installing all the components following the instructions in the different manuals I powered up. The fans were running and I heard only beeping (one long, followed by two short beeps). The ASUS Post Reporter did not tell me anything. When visiting the AMI website for the explanation of the beep code, I found out that this sequence does not exist on AMI Bios Mobos (how funny).
After reading in different forums I thought it might be the RAM's. I contacted my retailer and asked him I that could be the problem. He assured me, that that could not be the reason for the failure.
Nevertheless, I ordered the RAM that was explicitly mentioned as compatible with the Mobo on the ASUS website. Two modules Kingston 512 MB DDR2-400 ECC reg. as a pair.
And it worked!!
How I love my new machine!
Conclusions:
- ASUS support is not really worth it
- The beep codes sometimes are not really telling the truth
- The ASUS boards seem to be rather picky when it comes to RAM
- The retailers sometimes are not really telling the truth
- Never give up
