Fax Problem

I am trying to install Fax services from my XPSP2 CD from the Add Windows
Components section of the Add \ Remove programs dialog. The setup program
says it cannot copy the files and asks me to provide their location,
although it is at the same time showing the correct location (i.e. my
Windows CD). Has anyone any idea what is going on?

Try the i386 folder, or the proper subfolder on the CD. Use Search to
locate the proper folder.

I have a similar problem to Walt G. I tried installing Fax using the
location suggested by the Windows Components Wizard in 'Add/Remove Windows
Components":
c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386
When I hit OK I get a Copy Error Message which says "Setup cannot copy the
file fx...."
The Error message also suggests using the Windows XP Prof Service Pack 2 CD
which I do not have but have just ordered. However Walt G. says he gets the
same error message using the CD so I am not sure the CD will solve the
problem.

What gives?

It isn't there and it isn't on the SP2 disk. There is a updated DLL on the
SP2 disk but not the fax program itself.
You will need a retail XP disk. Maybe you could get a friend to loan you one
or send the fax files to you.

I did a little research on this and if you want them, I can send you the
needed files. Just need a place to send to. only about 100KB.

Dear Bud,

Thank you for your helpful comments.

I researched this issue further as it was not just the Fax program that was
not intalling but other windows components. In Knowledge base article
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=884018
the problem is described as being a "corrupted security database". The
solution is to "rebuild the corrupted security database" with a link to
another KB article, not a particularly appealing solution as doing so may
affect other programs one is running.

One would have hoped for something a bit more elegant from MS.

I am still deciding whether to live without the funcitonality or whether to
try to fix the corrupted security database. If you have any furtehr ideas
let me know.
