We're trying to convert a 160GB Western Digital external hard drive from
FAT32 to NTSF.
It will be hooked via USB to a Dell desktop running XP home ed.. I'm pretty
sure I've done this before, but not so sure on an external drive. I don't
remember if I did it w/the Device Mgr. or from a Command Prompt? What's the
best way to do this?
thanks for the attention.

Hello,

in cmd,
convert X: /FS:NTFS
will be good. I always do it that way.

Greetings,

I presume that you mean that you want to convert the file system to
NTFS. "NTSF" is a television broadcast format. ;-}

The fact that you've an external drive shouldn't make any difference.

You can safely convert your current hard drive to NTFS whenever
desired, without having to format the partition and reinstall
everything. As always when performing any serious changes, back up any
important data before proceeding, just in case. A little advance
preparation is also strongly recommended, so you can avoid any
performance hits caused by the default cluster size:

I have a western digital 160gb drive and it required device manager to
be used to format it.

Rick

Actually, that would be NTSC (National Television Standards Committee), not
NTSF.

Device Manager? How is Device Manager used to format a drive?

They told you how to do it. When are they going to tell you about user
rights, and the partition you converted the NTFS?

There is an option in XP for the conversion. I know because I have done it.
Try the Windows Help and Support and search for NTFS, and it will come up.
But once converted, you cant go back to FAT32.
