Failure configuring windows update. Windows 8

I only have the new computer for two days, and today it stopped working as it has tried to update windows for the last 2 hours. It only says "failure configuring windows update. Undoing changes don't turn off your computer" and I can't do anything else than this. I have tried to switch on and off and it goes back to the same. I am not sure how to go to a safe mode to do anything else. Any advice very grateful
