I'm assuming you're on XP or earlier for this. I don't know much about Vista.
If you don't see "Safe Mode" appearing in all four corners of your screen on
the desktop then you're not in safe mode. The easiest way to turn off safe
mode is to go to start>run>msconfig and click normal startup and then OK. If
that doesn't work, go back to msconfig, click the boot.ini tab and uncheck
/safeboot
It sounds more like you have either a video driver problem or a display
settings problem.
Video drivers are painful to explain so I'll just explain the display
settings part and you can let us know if that does not fix your problem.
Start>Run>Control Panel and double click the Display Icon. Click on the
settings tab and then move the resolution slider to a higher setting. I like
1024x768 but if you have an older computer or a really cheap video adapter,
it may only let you go up to 640x480 or something. Anyway, choose a higher
setting and click OK. You may have to restart the computer for the settings
to take effect.
To restore the dos file, on Windows 98SE you can start from the recovery
disk and type something like sys.com or sys.exe and it will copy those files
back onto the hard disk. The only catch with this method is it might
overwrite your autoexec.bat and... I don't remember what the other file is.
You could also just copy the DOS file off of the Windows CD. I'm not familiar
enough with other operating systems as it relates to that problem, but
hopefully that will help you. Things don't change much from Windows 95 up to
2000 and I'm pretty sure that file doesn't exist in XP or Vista.
