I have extensive issues with my Sony Vaio laptop operating Windows 8.
Currently, I am apparently running two copies of Windows 8. When I turn on my computer, I get the option to run "Windows 8 in volume 5" or "Windows 8 in volume 5". They are both exactly the same.
I have tried updating to Windows 8.1. I get error code x80070490. I have followed the steps here - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958044
and it did not work.

with dism error 1726. I followed the steps in the reply, it didn't work.
I cannot update my Windows operating system, and neither can I format or restore my system.
When I try to reset, or restore, this is what I get:
"Check for solutions to this problem" does not actually lead anywhere. It runs a troubleshooter for a second and then closes, seemingly nothing even happens.
I am very frustrated with my computer and I would appreciate help.
