DVD+RW shows up as DVD-ROM

Hi,

I've burned almost 4.7GB of backup data onto a DVD+RW, no problem
whatsoever. However, in the My Computer tab the Windows Explorer (WE) shows
the DVD+RW always as a DVD-ROM.

In the properties WE shows:
File system: UDF
Used space: 1,653,098,873 bytes (this is always correct)
Free space: 0 bytes

So in the properties Free Space is always 0 bytes, as is with a ROM, but
nonetheless I can burn as much data on the DVD I want, until the 4.7GB is
full.

QUESTION ; Why does WE shows the DVD+RW as a DVD-ROM??

The computer is a Sony Vaio PCG-GRT916Z laptop with Drag'n Drop CD+DVD
software that burns the DVD in a bridge format UDF/ISO/Joliet.
OS: WindowsXP sp2
Drive: All optical +/- CD and DVD. So DVD+RW is no problem

The DVD driver is still the original one and I have not found any updates
yet.
The drive is:
Sony DVD RW DW-U54A version 1.5A \4146343845303532_0_0_0_0_0_0_0_0_0_0_0_0

Do you have any knowledge of websites to update DVD drivers??, please let me
know.

thanks, johan

That's normal with XP. Besides DVD±RW, my LG writer also reads/writes
DVD-RAM, so it shows up in Explorer as DVD-RAM. XP can't natively burn
a DVD, therefore doesn't recognize the writing capability. Vista, on the
other
hand, does write DVDs natively, and DVD±RWs are properly listed in WE
as DVD RW.

Windows XP doesn't recognise the existence of either DVD+R or DVD+RW (and
indeed has not got the appropriate icons in its library). As a consequence
it always shows disks of this type as DVD-ROM. Since windows doesn't
support writing of any DVD, except DVD-RAM, third party utilities have no
difficulty with the + version of the DVD format.

Hi Ian,
Is SP3 going to contain any drivers for DVD+/-RW reading and writing??

Probably not. MS is wanting everyone to go to Vista so mainly SP3 may
only contain "minor" fixes.
