Hi I have a laptop I watch DVD's on it sometimes like when I am on a trip or sometimes here at home. I use windows 7 and usually use the VLC player but it keeps crashing just watching DVD's. I live in a really hot area and we don't use much AC here in Louisiana my home. My husband has a PC but it's in the shop, so we have been watching DVD's on the laptop with his monitor but the whole thing keeps crashing. Could the hot temperatures be doing that? I am not sure so if someone can help me figure this out I would be elated. I tried another forum but they told me to take the laptop to a shop? Maybe I need to invest in a good air conditioning window unit to keep the temperature more cool?

Heat is a real killer especially with a laptop. Everything in a laptop is in a small space and if you are making it work hard by watching a video it can't keep cool.

I would make sure there is room underneath and on all sides for proper air flow. There are laptop stands that have fans built in to help cool laptops. I would invest in one of them. While a cool room would be better you still should make sure there is adequate air flow all around it.

Either add a docking station as Bob suggests, or simply prop the back end up on something...a piece of flat molding could do nicely for that purpose, and of course cooling the room should help immensely. Have you tried using a vacuum cleaner hose and sucking whatever crud you can out of the vents on the laptop?.

If you're in dire need of some way to cool down your laptop and don't want to spend the cash on a cooling pad, Instructables has a simple solution in the form of some overturned egg cartons.

Flip some empty cartons over and you get plenty of airflow. Plus you won't burn your legs if you want to actually put your laptop on your lap. It's by no means the prettiest thing, but it's cheap, and gets the job done. An ugly setup is better than an overheating machine.

If you have an old computer case lying around, use one of the side panels to make this.

Hello I had seen those laptop things in Target before I will be going there today and for now I took your advice and propped it up with a box top with air going underneath from a fan. For now it's doing ok we watched Riddick and Pacific Rim and didn't have any freezing. Thanks for the quick fix now off to Target!
