I recently installed a Sony DVD RW (Model DRU-840A) in my Dell 4550.
According to Best Buy and Sony this DVD is a plug&Play device. However,
whenever I boot my machine I'm getting a message that "New Hardware" has been
installed, then i get the window to locate and load the driver. There is no
driver, it's a plug and play unit. Is there anyone that can help me resolve
this issue with the pop-up appearing every time i start the computer. OH,
the DVD is working. I can copy files to it using Nero 8.

Are you sure that there is not any "other" hardware that XP is trying
yo install?

In hardware devices check for any exclamation marks

Try uninstalling / removing the device & rebooting

NO exclamation marks, no question marks. I've removed, rebooted,
re-installed. No change. I believe I have corrupted drivers, and I'm NOT
going to format the hard drive and reload this beast. I'm ready for a new
one after 4 years.

Neither. Has instructed, I set the jumper on CSEL, per the directions. The
geek squad at Best Buy even mentioned the jumpers and they agreed with the
CSEL setting. Do you think I should set the jumpers to master or slave and
you mentioned?

CSEL is fine as long as you are using an 80 conductor cable.
Plug-n-play does not mean that you don't have to install drivers.
If the drivers were not included on the OS install disk, then
the manufacturer of the drive has to provide them with the
drive or make them available for download. I have two
Sony DVD R/W drives and they both came with driver CDs.

The only CD that came with the drive is a Nero ver 7 disk. I didn't laod it
because I already have Nero ver. 8 installed. The prompt even say that I had
a "Newer" version installed and said I had to remove that version before I
could load 7. Why in the world would I go backwards !!

Nero are not drivers.

Probably has a damaged registry key. Make sure you back up the key before
you delete it in case you would need to reinstall it. Assuming this is an
IDE device you would find
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\IDE"
in the registry and right-click the registry key and delete it. Then reboot
and it will find the IDE devices and produce new keys.
