Dvd drive not working after re-install of Xp?

3 weeks ago I installed a new hard drive. I also re-installed Win Xp
home edition from the xp disc that came with my Emachines pc.
Playing Cd's and burning cdr's works fine. But my computer won''t read
or write dvd's. When I look in (My Computer) it says I only have a Cd
drive. It use to say cd/dvdrw drive. The system won't recognize
anything but cd's. The drive in my computer is a Samsung
Tsstcorp cd/dvdw ts h552b. Any tips to resolving this issue are
greatly appreciated.

Windows XP does not include a native DVD writer. You need to obtain a proper
DVD recording application. Roxio and Nero are two major brands, though there
are some free ones out there. You might try here:

What Burning software do you have installed? If you haven't installed any,
you need to, XP has the ability to burn CD's without 3rd party software, but
cannot burn DVD.

first off, he has a cd/dvdrw which means that he can write a dvd and also
play one. Apparently yu knocked out the firmware for your dvd unit..follow
the next step here

You can try up-dating the firmware application...from this site for your
make and model, it is the official site of your product...

folder somewhere in my documents...for further use if necessary, you can also
use a floppy to store it...this fix will allow your operating system to
correctly identify your cd/dvd writer....and restore it to manufacturers
specs...Software on the other hand, is something that is probably included
with an emachine disk that came with the computer, you just probably did'nt
install it when you installed the operating system again from scratch...

Firmware has nothing to do with it. The OP needs to install DVD writing
software.

I just downloaded this firmware. I doubleclicked it. But Xp doesn't
recognize this file type. It is a bin. file.

I recommend you follow Gary's advice. I used Nero's OEM edition that
came bundled with my drive. I've since upgraded to their current
commercial version because I want to do more than the OEM version
supports.

I have power dvd and nero 7 platinum installed. They don't recognize
my drive as well. They treat my drive like it is Cd only. The firmware
I have on my drive is from 2001. The latest firmware I downloaded is
2006. I want to use it. But it is a .bin file. Xp doesn't know what to
do with the .bin file type.

Usually there is a utility you download from the CD/DVD manufacturer's site
that will install the firmware(.bin file).
It's almost the same as flashing the computer BIOS, but with the utility it
can be done from within Windows.
The other thing that I haven't seen mentioned (maybe I missed it) is to open
My Computer, right click the CD/DVD drive and enable burning.
In many cases, the capability to burn/record is disabled by default.

Re-read the thread from the beginning, his os, was re-installed, after the
re-install, the device no longer is recognized by the os as a cd/dvd-rw,
meaning it is rendered as a cd/dvd player,

He has to download the bin file, and the .exe for the installation, run the
..exe which will allow him to choose the device from a list, then navigate to
the bin file and execute the bin...end of story, I'm not here for my ego, or
to play a flaming game, not my style...

Now that I think of it, I think the solution to your problem is
simple: Uninstall your driver; reboot; Windows will see a "new"
device and install a driver for it.

I don't remember the exact details to do this, but I did it once. I
went into Device Manager | DVD/CD-ROM drives. I right clicked my drive
and selected Uninstall. Probably, before I did that, I went into
properties and noted the fully-qualified name of the driver. After
uninstalling, I think I renamed the driver to add "-OLD", thus
removing it but preserving it in case recovery is needed.
