I am trying to help my friend set up his vista laptop to connect to
the printer he has shared on his desktop pc but am getting an error
message "you are not connected because a duplicate name exists on the
network"
Below are the details
There is an xp pc (\\carey) with a printer on it which is shared as
\printer
(The other 2 machines which are all XP machines can access it connect
and print no problem)
The workgroup is set up corrcetly, all machines are part of a
workgroup called "WORKGROUP" and the machines have different names.
I get ping reponses to when i do ip address pings to and from all
machiness
when i try to connect to the main PC by name, i.e. \\home from the
run command, i get "you are not connected because a duplicate name
exists on the network. when i try and connect to the printer from the
run command however when i try to connect by tying \\home\epsonsty i
get windows can not connect to the printer, access is denied.
If i type \\192.168.1.65 into the run command. it will display the
shares etc no problem.
I have rebooted all machines, and renamed the printer, the main hime
pc and the vista laptop but none of this has made the slightest bit of
difference to my friends network.
While setting up mine, the only issue i had was connecting to the
actual pirnter. then i found some info which helped.
Just want to share what I have discovered with windows vista. If you
would like to connect to a remote printer in a remote computer
connected in your router do the following:
Go to Control Panel. Choose printer. Then choose Add Printer.
Choose Add a local printer. Click on Create a new port. The default in
the drop down box is Local Port. Do not change that. Click Next. A
dialogue box will appear asking for you to enter a port name. Type in
the \\computer name\printer name .

Any assistance with my duplicate names issue would be most greatfully
recieved.
