I get the cumulative security update but it fails to download. I always get
error code 80070002. I follow instructions. No avail. I have called
Microsoft, paid my $59 and they couldn't fix it. They said it was for a 64
bit VISTA OS. They did refund my $59.00, and hid the update. I still get it
and the error. Help please!!!!!

I have a 64 bit system but I'm not running XP64 or Vista. Im using XP
Professional. To clear the auto instal and not get the download again. click
on the install buble click on custom in stall. Deselect the net frame work.
and then it should open up the tree then put a check in do not ask me about
this update again. I will remove the install bubble from the systray and you
will not be reminded of it again.

Does it actually fail to download or fail to install? If it fails to install,
then you need to install it manually. I had the same problem when Vista tried
installing the update. I'm guessing it's framework 1.1 service pack 1 that
fails to install? If so, then you need to go to
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Install (assuming your main hard-drive is C:)
to install it manually. Hope this helps.

Wow....worked for me! Solved the problem before I even heard back from
Microsoft. Thanks brittybabe69!

I also have the same problem when installing the MICROSOFT .NET
FRAMEWORKS UPDATE 1.1. All fixes suggested by MS helps have failed.
The error occurs on the install, not the download. Can anyone help?

Look in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\Install

This worked for me. Thanks brittybabe69.

Ah-ha, BritanyBabe69 left off a folder name! Anyway, the manual
install worked. But then WindowsUpdate again told me that I still
needed to install the NET 1.1 update, even though the manual update
was successful, so I simply hid this update. Then the WindowsUpdate
told me that I needed to install a security update for NET 1.1, which
I did. Now WindowsUpdate tells me that I'm up to date . . . FINALLY!
:)

Thanks for the help,
Bill

Britty, you are a babe. Thank you so much. I had to click on downloads, to
find the program I needed to install, after I went into SoftwareDistribution.
Some other dummy out there like me might need to know that. Thank you again.

I can help you!

Well, first of all let me just say that I am not a computer professional. However, I have had the same problem with my 32-Bit Windows Vista Home Premium (making Microsoft's statement null and void) and I have solved it! Here are the step by step instructions:

1) Go to the Start Menu.
2) Click on Computer.
3) Open up the drive where windows is installed (usually your C drive).
4) Open the Windows Folder.
5) Scroll down a bit and locate the SoftwareDistribution folder (exactly like that).
6) Open the Download folder.
7) Open the Install folder.
8) There sould only be one file there. Right click on it and select "Run as Administrator".
9) After entering an Administrator password, run the installation, using the default values and clicking yes at the license.
10) After the installation is complete (shouldn't take more than a few minutes), restart your computer (as an added precaution, though not necessary).
11) After the computer restarts again, run Windows Update again. It should run as normal. All fixed!
I apologize for Microsoft's ineptitude.

RE: I can help you!

When I open "Download" there is no Install Folder. There is one file in
there: 7a5b25d65a70b8ecd6a9c301a0aea10d8483a23...
If I right click that file there is no option to run as administrator. If I
double click it asks me which program I want to use to open it. I clicked
Internet Exporer and then it asked me if I wanted to save this file or find a
program online to open it. I saved it to my desktop.

Can you help me further please!
Thanks

Look under "SoftwareDistribution/Download/Install".

Bill you can just start the download using the folder that is in the Software
Distribution then opent that file and go to the download file it is in there
if it downloaded. I hope this helps you.

Details matter. Is your OS Vista too?

Re: I can help you!

Yes, I have Vista Home Premium. What I finally did last night is go to
Microsoft and download this Microsoft.NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 update
to my desktop. I created a restore point and then I clicked on that
downloaded file and installed it. A message said the update was successful.
It did not say I had to restart, but I did. After restart I ran Windows
Update and it indicated there were no updates available for my computer so I
assume this worked.

Also, I had written to Windows Update tech support and I finally got an
answer from them tonight. So if anyone out there reads this and what I did
above doesn't work for them I would be happy to post to this site the
directions I received from the tech support. Just let me know.

ok, I don't have an "install" under the windows/software distrubution,
download folder, either. Can someone please explain how to do it? I have seen
it asked but no one has answered! I have been battling this forever!
