my laptop was working fine, a client computer on a home wireless router. Out
of nowhere it won't connect to the internet and there is an error message
saying limited or no connectivity. We hadn't done anything new or different
so I don't know what happened. I checked in device manager and there was a
yellow alert symbol by the PCI modem. It said there wasn't a driver
installed. I tried to reinstall it, repair it, update it but nothing worked.
As a last resort I uninstalled it and rebooted but that didn't work either.
Next day, the screen is blank. I reboot, the initial windows xp logo comes
up with the blue bars underneath then it goes blank. The computer's making
all the usual noises associated with startup and I can see shadow images of
the start up screen but that is it. Did the first problem cause the second
or are they seperate problems? I'm starting to feel cursed! Help anyone!!

it could be a virus or just a corrupt file. It could also be a hardware
problem.
You could try a restore system disk or xp repair to get it going. If you do
make sure
you know what you are doing.

I'm a bit of a novice at all this but I'm not afraid to try! I did run a
full system virus scan after the "no connectivity" issue and there were two
that turned up. Don't know if that was the cause. Where would I find a
restore system disk? Is that something I should already have and just don't
know it? :)

Usually it's a good idea to unplug the router and plug it back in when
this happens, at least as one of the first things to check for loss of
connectivity.

The PCI modem should not have had anything to do with your wireless
issue. Are you sure that is all you uninstalled?

Try booting into Safe Mode (start computer, press F8 repeatedly until a
menu comes up, then select Safe Mode (with networking if you choose)).
If it boots, exit and reboot again. Sometimes this can cure an
issue. If it hangs again, boot into Safe Mode and use System Restore to
a date prior to your problem (Start, All Programs, Accessories, System
Tools, System Restore).

Report back,

> Terry,

Thanks for the post, unfortunately I can no longer see anything on my screen
so am unable to try anything. From the little I have read, I think what
backlights my screen (bulb/lighting panel)is dead. The screen, when it did
show at start up, was reddish and flickering, now it is black with shadow
images. It seems to be an unrelated problem but what do I know? I do know
this, bad things come in three's so I'd better keep my fingers crossed. Any
suggestions if this screen issue is a bad bulb?
