Domain rename

I am trying to rename a server 2003 domain. I get the following error when
running rendom /list:
The behavior version of this forest has not been set to 2 or greater: the
server is unwilling to process the request. :8245

Any ideas ?
 
Can you giev us some more info on your setup

What are you trying to rename: domain or server name
is it a single server domain

Whoever originally configured the domain called it domain.com. I need to
change it to domain.local as the internal clients cannot access the website
"domain.com" which is served fro an external web server; DNS can't resolve
the name, the clients receive "Page cannot be displayed".

This is a single server running Server2003 Ent, SP2. There are about 30
workstations.

The end goal is to have the clients able to access their website.

It might be easier just to create a record in the dns to point to the
website. Personally the best way is to dc promo back rename and then dcpromo
it back up again but this would mean re doing all the clients.

Why not just add a DNS entry (www) in domain.com which points to the IP of
the external website?

There are potentially other reasons to rename the domain, but if this is
the only real reason then that's probably not worth the effort.

I would like to avoid recorfiguring AD.
How and what would the DNS record be entered? I don't have a static IP for
the web site.

Could be difficult if you don't have a static ip address for a website.
Where is this site hosted if its not got a static address

It's a bit messy ...

idea: configure your client PC's/Server's internet browser with a mandatory
proxuyserver (GPO, Scripted) , have that proxy server use an external DNS
(that of your ISP) for name resolution.

Or ... fork out for a static IP. Changing domain name for this is shooting a
fly with a nuclear warhead :-)
