Do I need a home network?

I set up a home network and now I'm wondering if I need it. Why can't I just connect through a miniport? I'm confused with all these network settings available. I am running Win/7 using I.E. 11 and ethernet connection from my modem to router. Since I have a laptop in my home, I need to run wireless which requires the router, correct? I do not take my laptop out of my home. Can someone please help a old lady configure her network connections. I am connected to IPV4 but no connectivity in IPV6, does this mean anything?


Confused and old...
