Q: My internal domain name is set to mydomain.com (for example) however the
my web page (located on an internet server outside of the intranet) is
located on www.mydomain.com. I created a entry in the DNS to reroute queries
to the correct IP however I have discovered that my staff's mail pop server
is actuall mydomain.com. Given my internal domain is also mydomain.com if I
creat a DNS entry to reroute queries of mydomain.com am I likely to have
problems. Or is there a method that can do this safely with pop queries from
Outlook email progs.
 
Okay... you can consider this issue solved. I have elected to use the IP
address's of the POP and SMTP servers so as to avoid having to change the
Domain name. In answer to thos who will till me it is crazy to use a .com
domain qualifier for an internal domain I agree... but I didnt set the server
up and damned if I am going to the hassle of changing it. But if anyone can
tell me other issue likely to arise in the small business environment let me
know.

Ben,

You can add entries to DNS for specific servers like www.mydomain.com,
pop.mydomain.com that point ot externals or internal addresses, so if the
server is external or internal you will not have an issue.

Absolutely, I have added www.mydomain.com to point to an external IP however
the problem is that the pop server for our email is actually mydomain.com (ie
no pop. in front) Therefore the mail servers Domain name is exactly the same
as that of my windows server local domain. I queried the guy who set up the
system and his reasoning behind using a public domain name for a local
network was that if we wanted to use exchange server later - we could put an
external DNS entry to point to our local server ....but who the heck wants to
do that anyway! As I have previously read my web hosting company has a bevvy
of it security guys and monitoring in place, why risk opening my local
network..

I dont think I can place a DNS entry for the domain name for the local
network to an external server. That was my question.

Create another entry for the mailsever internally call it mail.mydomain.com
and have it point to your pop/mail server?










you perform \\domain.com you nee to see the sysvol folder etc ....
