So. For months now every single time I open IE11, dllhost.exe runs for no apparent reason. It even runs after I close it and go to a new URL. It doesn't do this with FireFox. So for a while I've just not been using IE11. Also to note I had this problem about a year ago and a fresh OS install remedied it. But it came back, and about it did at the time I visited a certain website, the same one I visited before and dllhost.exe began doing this. Suspicious.
On 6/14 after I rebooted because of a hang up, I noticed something new. Every time I click a file or folder, dllhost.exe runs itself. It never used to do this. If it is a file or folder I previously clicked and dllhost.exe has ran on, it won't run (again) the next time I click that same file or folder. Suspicious!
Also to note that multiple instances of it run at times, and sometimes the *32 version. And that when in task manager and clicking to see its origin folder, sometimes it goes to Win32 and sometimes it goes to SysWOW64, a folder I haven't heard of until now. SysWOW64 also has "dllhstG" or some such in it.
When using process explorer and nabbing the process before it disappears and going to its permissions, it has the system, my administrator account, and a 3rd. Named "Unknown" followed by a sequence of numbers. Threads related to it include ntdll.exe.
Is there supposed to be a dllhost and whatnot in SysWOW64's folder? Or just in Win32? Why is it opening like this? Why are there multiple instances and a *32 version at times? How in the world am I supposed to replace it with a non-corrupt file? Scanning with MSE detects nothing, but this is not usual in the least. Unless there was an update that changed things, but I doubt it.
I would really rather not have to install my OS again. My internet speed is incredibly slow and I would have to download over 400 gigabytes of data over again.
Can I install a 2nd harddrive to my PC and reinstall the OS without deleting installed video games, drivers, etc.? Or replace the extensions?
