Display resolution reverting after "apply"

Running Windows XP, probably SP2 since have been updating and IE 7 is
the browser version. This Dell computer is about 7 years old and came
with XP, Home Office Edition.

Problems are many. Have run disk cleanup, defragged, and anti virus.
Also, use Spybot.

The first issue is it is extremely slow in general, but especially to
get online via DSL (AT&T).

But, the initial problem we are trying to figure out is why it starts
in the lowest screen resolution. We change it to the highest
resolution, then click apply. When we proceed to do anything else, like
access the internet, log on etc... it reverts to the lowest resolution
again. Then after a certain point it will hold the higher resolution
for that session until the next time we turn the computer on. Then it's
the same scenario.

Is it possible IE 7 is causing problems since the box is so old?

Any help appreciated.
