I have a Inspiron 6400 with 2 Gb memory, which until 3 days ago gave no
problems. Since then when I am typing anything, e.g., Word document, http,
outlook message, the display can be up to 8 characters behind my (slow two
fingered) typing.
I've run Virus and Spyware checks - all clear.
Any thoughts?

Try typing by running Windows in Safe Mode. To know how to start Windows in
Safe Mode, see article below:

http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

Is the problem persist in Safe Mode too?

Open Task Manager (by Right-clicking on Taskbar and choose Task Manager).
Try to figure out any unsual process both in Normal and Safe Mode. Is there
any? If you can then send as a Screen Short of your running process or right
down the process list.

According to my experience, the Anti Spywares doesn't gurrantted 100%
protection. Even sometimes by PCs got infected by Spywares even the Anti
Spywares is running. I have also tried many different Anti Spywares but none
of them always work.

If you think that everything is fine or keyboard is buffering fine in Safe
Mode too then right us the last major change you have made to your system
like any program you installed or a registry fix or installed any new
hardware etc.

If keyboard is working fine in Safe Mode and there is no harmful process in
Task Manager then try reinstalling your Display Driver.

Let us know!

Will look at SafeMode tonight when I get home and let you know outcome.

One item brought up no links at Google - hnrn_svc.exe. Do you know what
that executable is part of? If not, it is suspicious and it would be
wise to run a more systematic check for malware per:

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

Also, when you took this list had you opened Internet Explorer? If not,
it is running by itself and that is another sign of malware infection.

If you are really sure the machine is malware/virus-free, do clean-boot
troubleshooting to pinpoint the troublemaker:

Also let us know the amount of Total Memory installed in your system. As per
your process list, I am amazed that only Paint Brush is using nearly 22MB of
RAM. At the time of writing this post, where you working in PaintBrush too
and was there a heavy file being opened? Don't forget to try Safe Mode.

If you are sure that your system is clean from any infection and the process
indicated by Malke is not a Malware then try this:

1. Click Start - Run - type MSCONFIG and press enter key
2. Click the Startup tab and check all the entries except your Anti Virus
and Anti Spyware program entries (if you know about them).
3. Restart your PC and check if this help.

If it solved the problem that means an unusual startup entry is causing the
problem.

Let us know!

Thanks for suggestions - status as follows:

1. In Safe Mode the problem disappears.
2. I've now used 4 spyware/virus scan products and found nothing.
3. The system has 2 Gb memory and the disk is about 11% full and has been
defraged.
4. Paintbrush was running with two screen dumps - maybe explains 22Mb.
5. Tried MSConfig suggestion - no difference.
6. Nothing surprising in Startup.
7. Removed ZoneAlarm - no difference - reinstalled - still same problem.

I am beginning to think it is a setting somewhere - it almost looks like
every character being typed is being checked?

Giving you a link:

http://technodigits.wordpress.com/2007/07/24/how-to-manually-remove-viruses-from-your-system/

Here you will find to utilities called: Process and AutoRun. Download and

Possibly something you have checked in Accessibility Options?

Yes, Malke could be right. Check Filter Key (Control Panel - Accessibility
Options) status in Safe Mode and set the same in Normal Mode.

Hope this help, let us know!

Examined Check Filter Key in Safe Mode - same as Normal Mode. Also have been
comparing setup against a colleagues machine (identical hardware and
software) - both set the same way.
Getting close to activating the Dell factory restore. Reluctant as a lot of
effort to re-establish environment.
One observation - Zoenalarm has some indicators which show what is active -
on my machine there are 2 "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services" - his
shows only one. Any thoughts?
Thanks again for your help.

Thanks for help - problem fixed.
PCMService.exe seems to be the cause of the problem. Un-ticking it in the
Startup fixed the problem.
I wonder why it only started happening now? Only changes applied to the
system were Microsoft patches.
