When using My Documents folder redirection to Users Home Directory on a
Server 2003 R2 SP2 file server with disk quotas, items deleted from the
user's My Documents folder are stored in the Recycler folder. This is
causing a huge amount of content in those Recycler folders being counted
toward users' disk quotas--which is unacceptable even if the default size is
set to 1% since the file server volume is over 400GB.
We know from experience that our users will not be disciplined enough to
empty their recycle bins.
Since we use VSS to provide previous versions of files, we may decide to use
Group Policy to prevent deleted items from being sent to the Recycle Bin
(User Config - Admin Tmplts - Windows Components - Windows Explorer).
However, we still have a very large amount of deleted items in each users'
Recycler folder on the server which we need to delete. On the file server, we
tried right clicking on that folder and selecting 'Empty,' but the option is
grayed out.
We are able to delete the GUID in which the deleted items are located. My
problem is not knowing whether this is safe to do. What are the consequences
of deleting the Recycler folder GUID?
I would also like to find a solution either to be run on the server or as a
user logon script that deletes items from the user's Recycle Bin based the
amount of time the item has been in the Recycle Bin. So for example have a
script that deletes all items from the users Recycle Bin that was deleted
over 120 days ago.
