When doing Disk Cleanup on WinXPSP2, the option to Compress Old Files to Save
Disk Space is available. What criterion or criteria is/are used by the OS to
determine "Old" - is it based on Modified Date? Last Accessed Date?

Thanks,

The criterion is that a file hasn't been used for 50 days at least.

Thank you. Is that a setting in the registry that can be configured?

The option to compress old files can be removed from the registry, however,
that 50 days criterion is hard-coded AFAIK.

When you run Disc Cleanup & the results window pops up , highlight the
"Compress Old Files" & look in "Options"
There you can change the number of days.

Thanks, Gary.

You're quite welcome!
~Gary

Thank you, Detlev. But please decipher your acronym: AFAIK...

Search using Google!
http://www.google.com/
(How-to: http://www.google.com/intl/en/help/basics.html )

Example... A search for:

what is the acronym AFAIK

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=what+is+the+acronym+AFAIK

Brings up links like:
http://www.acronymfinder.com/af-query.asp?String=exact&Acronym=afaik

Which tells you AFAIK stands for "As Far As I Know" or "And for All I
Know"...

Shenan the point being that this is one of the rare occasions when
Detlev did not know and Gary did. JCB thought the solution simple but it
is not obvious unless you know it's there. It was a new one to me!

AFAIR: As Far As I Know. I added this term because I removed the "Compress
Old Files" option from *all* of my systems according to this MSKB article:
"Disk Cleanup Tool Stops Responding While Compressing Old Files"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/812248/en-us

Therefore, the option that Gerry mentioned (good catch) is not available
here since all of my systems are configured the same way regarding the
basic settings.

Typo. AFAIK: As Far As I Know.
(AFAIR: As Far As I Remember)

Detlev

Gary pointed it out not me.
