Disappearing phone numbers

Since installing Windows Vista Business, I have noticed that phone numbers
disappear from view after a few seconds on screen. This is happening in
hotmail, email and general web pages. Has anyone else experienced this? Got
any ideas?

Where, exactly, are you seeing phone numbers?
I can't think of any Windows function that displays phone numbers onscreen.
Can you provide more details? Are you saying that anyplace a phone number
appears, no matter what font or format, it will eventually disappear?
Like, (800) 555-1234. That's going to disappear from this email as you read
it?

I'm using Ultimate, not Business, so maybe there's some function in Business
that you're describing that I'm not aware of.

When I read an email in hotmail, or look at contact details on a website, the
number will appear for a few seconds when the page first opens, but will
disappear shortly afterward. Interestingly enough, the number you typed is
still displayed so I am unsure why it remains sometimes and disappears other
times...

Wow! That's a new one for me.
I'd be interested in finding out the answer, if there is one.

I've never seen anything like that either and Googling just shows me
where you posted the same question at tabletquestions.com. Since you
apparently have a table pc, you might try posting your question in the
tablet pc newsgroup. It's microsoft.public.windows.tabletpc. When you
post there, make sure you include the make/model of your tablet.

In the meantime in order to narrow down the troubleshooting, answer:

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time
things worked and the time they didn't?

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the
malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what
programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?

Be sure the computer is clean:

I am having the very same experience on my new laptop that is running
VISTA! I find that even if I am the one generating the telephone
number it will pull the very same disappearing act! If I access
Hotmail through a machine with XP every thing is just fine... the
telephone numbers remain.

It's been reported that the Skype 'add on' browser helper for IE may cause
this. To test this, or other add-ons, try running the "Internet Explorer
(No Add-ons)" shortcut in Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\System Tools.

Having same problem on new computer running Vista Ultimate.

Thanks for the tip about disabling add-ons which solved the problem.
Have to alert Skype that its seizing of my numbers is no good.

Got rid of Skype. That did the trick. Phone numbers in e-mails no longer
disappear. Did not use Skype anyway.

Same problem as what? Because you 1) inserted your post into someone
else's thread 2) didn't even quote any of that thread - no one knows
what problem you mean.

I'm going to give a WAG and suggest that if you are using Skype, the
disappearing phone numbers are a known issue. Contact Skype tech support
in that case. If you're not using Skype, then post back with a full
description of the problem, what program it occurs in, and the history
of the problem. Here are links to help you with the next post:

If you had taken the pain to scroll through earlier posts, you might
have got your answer. Don't use skype.
In future always search for similar problems faced by others and
solutions provided to them, before starting a new thread.

There are no posts to scroll through because I, like most of the other
regular helpers, do not use the dreadful web interface. Most experienced
Usenet posters use real newsreaders to access newsgroups. I see you
aren't even using the awful Microsoft web interface but are using the
even worse Google Groups. You should be aware that some people in some
newsgroups will not even answer posters using Google Groups (obviously
I'm not one of them).

"Paulikins" is using a third, and equally inefficient - way to access
Usenet: he is posting off one of those web sites that purport to be a
"forum" but are really just scraping Usenet posts and presenting them in
a web format. This makes it nearly impossible to follow proper threads.

So do a little research before you pop back with a rude reply next time.
Oh, and just to make things easier for you and "Paulikins", here is
information about Usenet and setting up a newsreader (very easy to do):

Since you are using a web interface, you may not realize that this is
really a newsgroup. You will get far more out of this resource if you
learn to use a newsreader. There are many good newsreaders for Windows,
but you can use Outlook Express (XP) or Windows Mail (Vista) since you
already have it. Here are some links to information about newsgroups:

I recently downloaded Skype and was having the same disappearing phone
number problem. So I used the suggestion and disabled add ons. That
worked, but I have since decided to delete Skype and add back the Add
ons. I looked under Tools where it says "Manage Add ons" but it is
grayed out, I can't select it. I also went to Internet Options and
"Programs" but when you get to the option of enabling, again, it is
grayed out, I cannot select it. Does anyone know how I can re-enable the
Add ons?
Thank you,
Jackie

I am having the same problem - disappearing telephone numbers - am
running Vista Home Premium.

I tried clicking INTERNET EXPLORER (WITHOUT ADD ONS) but this did not
solve the problem.

I use Skype regularly so don't want to remove it, but am beginning to
think Skype is the culprit! I have emailed Skype today - wonder if I
will get a reply?

I found that by removing the Skype IE add-in, the problem disapeared.
This did not affect my regular use of Skype as a standalone application

DISAPPEARING TELEPHONE NUMBERS ON WEBSITES:

I contacted Skype yesterday about disappearing telephone numbers on
websites and received the following reply:

Our development teams are aware of this problem and are working hard to
fix this in a timely manner. The temporary solution to this issue is to
uninstall and reinstall Skype.

To reinstall Skype:

a) Go to Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features.
b) Search for „Skype” and uninstall it.
c) Go to 'Skype 3.8 for Windows - Download the latest version of Skype'
(http://www.skype.com/download) , get the latest version and install it.
When reinstalling, click the "Options" button in the first installation
window, where the license agreement is. Make sure that the checkboxes
for installing plugins are unchecked, after that install Skype as usual.

Please note, that you have to uninstall Skype before you reinstall it
to completely remove the plugins. If you just install Skype over the
existing Skype application, the plugins will not be removed and the
issue will not be resolved.

Hope this is of help.

Hi Frances

I have not read through all your posts but thought I would quickly give
you my input. My wife has an identical laptop to me and has identical
software (Vista and AVG and Skype) apart from the fact that I have the
latest AVG version 8.0. Her telephone numbers disappear, mine don't.

I followed the good advice of another link on HTFC (great site BTW) who
said to do the following (it worked for my wife's laptop):
on *Internet Explorer* go to *Tools* and *Manage Add-ons* and *Enable
or Disable Add-ons* and then select *Skype* (both of them, Skype and
Skype, Add-on (mastermind) - if you have them on there). Then *Save* and
*close and reopen Explorer*.

Did it work?

Perhaps you have already worked this one out. Can you tell me which
versions of Windows & Explorer you have, which Virus Checker you use and
whether you have, indeed, used Skype?

Best wishes

Joe

Hi Folks - Please see the following message from SKYPE:

Message from Skype:

this issue is to uninstall and reinstall Skype.

To reinstall Skype:

a) Go to Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features.

Hope the above is helpful.
