Disabling use of 2nd monitor

With my laptop, I use both an outboard monitor and the laptop's built-
in screen at the same time. But when the 2nd monitor isn't connected,
the laptop still seems to be set to the double-size desktop. When I
invoke a program that was last running on the outboard monitor, it
opens in the "void" that's off my screen. In the Windows Display
Settings tab, the "Extend my desktop onto this monitor" box is
UNchecked, so I need something else. How can I tell the system that
there is NO second monitor? Just one monitor! Thanks.
