My device manager is completely empty. I have found that I can no longer use
my USB ports. I have looked at Plug & Play and this is set to Automatic.
Also I have looked at my Console and that too is completely empty. I have
looked through some of the Posts on this issue but I can't find any that
relate to the severity of my problem. Short of buying a new PC is there any
remedial action I can take?

I have seem it mentioned that one issue could be due to poor RAM??

Use the System Restore tool provided that your problem doesn't exist long
time. Scan the system for malware first.

That's not very likely.

Can't do a system restore. I can choose dates and it goes through the
motions but the result is -ve, I have tried going back to several
checkpoints. I have run spybot etc and there is no evidence of any malware.
Any suggestions??

Nothing comes out of the blue. Why don't you update and start your anti-
virus - "SpyBot is *not* an AV! Note that malware can bypass any AV when
installed with administrative privileges. Good luck.

I have run my Kaspersky AV suite and nothing is detected, are there any other
options or programmes to try to see if malware is in my machine?

If malware has been installed with administrative privileges, an online
scan will fail as well. Provided that you were using an administrative
account even if not necessary (internet, mails etc.), booting with a
BartPE CD having an integrated anti-virus aboard *may* work in order to
detect the malware. If you were using a limited user account only, see
if the problem occurs with another account (eg. admin account) also.
Remove your limited user account if this is not the case.

Since your system seems to be pretty much damaged, I'd recommend a
repair install anyway if you're positive that the system is clean.
Remove all partitions and reinstall Windows from scratch otherwise.
Make sure to format all drives with NTFS rather than FAT32.
