device manager all of a sudden go blank?

out of no where my device manager is blank. this happened another time when
i loaded a game that was not for windows xp. i got that corrected but today i
didn't do anything and it was blank again.

does anyone know why it did it this time?

Just solved a similar matter on my XP machine. I had just uninstalled Norton 2008 and it had left a corrupt registry key that contained many nonsensical entries. If you also have Windows XP SP3 installed (as i did) try this link for a fix

Device Manager and Network Connections may be blank after you install
Windows XP Service Pack 3
