I hope somebody has an idea on this one.
When I run the defragment analyse utility it tells me I need to defrag and
shows loads of red on the display just to make the point.
However, when I run the defrag it gets to the end and the drive is still
fragmented!!
I even ran recovery console and used chkdsk c: /r thinking I might have one
or two corrupt files but this has made no difference.

Hello,

what percentage difference do you see after defragmentation? Null? What is
the fragmentation at the beginning?

Hi there,
no difference after defrag.
total fragmentation is 15%, file fragmentation is 30% and is mainly in the
"My Documents "folder (some 454 MB)

Probably there are some very large files that are too big for any clear
space.

You should be able to find a list of the most fragmented files. Copy those
files off to another disk, verify them, delete them. Defragment again,
then copy the files back. However, as defragmenting doesn't necessarily
consolidate free space, this may re-fragment the files.

It isn't a big issue. More of an issue is that a 20-gig drive isn't much,
and is older, and consequently should be examined for replacement. 80-gig
drives are under CDN$50. now.

Run Disk Defragmenter in Safe Mode.

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to
Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also
select Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp,
More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System
Restore point. Run Disk Defragmenter.

This worked for me. My C drive was 44% fragemented and running Defragmenter
would only help maybe 2%. Deleted all but latest Restore Point and run
Defragmenter again and got it down to 7% now.
