Defender does not appear to be removing viruses or malware downloaded with games?

This is the same problem I had previously had to reset my computer back to it's first day and start again. Something is destroying files and I did run across the apps like Facebook just has an x on it and doesn't work. Do I need to uninstall and reinstall again? Why isn't defender catching any of this. It says everything is fine. Should I download a malware program in addition like bit? Should I download Microsoft Security Essentials?

I have Windows Version 8.1.
