I'm currently running my computer with two partitions on its, windows m8 and Debian with xfce4.
The other partition with windows is irrelevant, my issues with Debian xfce4 have arousen inbetween different resolutions with different monitors.
I usually use my 720p 1360x768 tv as a monitor for my computer. I switched my computer over to use on a larger 1080p television.
The resolution while I used the larger television was 1920x1080, after hooking my computer back up to my 1360x768 tv I had issues with my display, eventually after trying to add display modes and a preferred mode in xorg.conf, which didn't actually change my resolution I managed to switch my resolution by accessing my display settings and selecting 1360x768 which I found to be at the top of my resolutions dropbox in my debian xfce4 desktop display settings.
It was weird to find it at the top of the list because it was out of order where as the other resolutions were ordered descending in sized from the top down.
I supposed that is because I listed the 1360x768 resolution as my preferred mode that it was listed at the top.
So, I realized though it appeared that 1360x768 was my preferred mode for my display driver, it still hadn't actually been using that resolution, it was still using 1920x1080 which i knew because my screen was still having issues displaying anything (that and my tv prompted me that it was going into 1920x1080 resolution)
The time I had booted into the session and successfully change my resolution to 1360x768 I remembered that it was working, so I figured the additions i made in the xorg.conf file were unessecary so I decided to remove them since the amd drivers I use in tangent with the other settings I had set didn't require or use the modes/preferredmode options in xorg.conf.
After I had deleted those lines however, though I didn't have any problems in my current uptime at the time, When I rebooted into the partition I started getting a black screen with an x as my cursor. I believe the issue related to me having listed and the changes that were made by using 1360x768 in xorg.conf, selecting the option in my display options, and then later removing the settings from xorg.conf which must have messed with some sort of identification or setting relating to my display since now I am having a black screen.
I bet I wouldn't have had any of these issues had I switched my resolution back down while I was hooked up to my 1920x1080 tv which though overscanned, still worked with smaller resolutions.
So my question is...

How do/can I change my resolution outside of xorg.conf in Debian with xfce4, at session start up (default or with what is supposed to be a new session) in ttyl since I can't access my desktop enviroment since all it is is a black screen and cursor shaped as an "X".
