Debian Linux with KDE

Hi,

I decided to have a go at installing debian. All went well apart from when I tried to install KDE onto it.

DSelect is just beyond a joke. Its just such a mess! I admit I havent installed linux before but still.

So i think I have selected everything for KDE with Dselect but when I go to install, the first odd thing is that it keeps on trying to read past the end of the CDROM so pages of errors come up there. Secondly it displays a list of the dependencies. It says to "Add a solution". How seriously useful...

So after my rant (sorry) does anyone have any tips for getting round this?

Best help I can offer is to satisfy the dependencies as you select the packeage to install. After you select each package you should be prompted to add the dependencies. It can be a pain since even the dependencies have dependencies, but, if you take your time and get them all you'll be happy with the end result. Debian is a great distro just a bit hard to install as you know.

Thanks for that. I tried using the --fix-broken switch which made it a little better. Seeing as dselect wasnt being too helpful with the dependencies. So i put the bear minimum on with tasksel and went forward. Now i try to start it all up with startx and it cant connect to the X Server. hmm, thinking probably mandrake 10 is worth a little look.

If the package manager isn't working for you, you might want to try just downloading the XFree86 and KDE sources and compiling yourself ... might be a good idea to try it on a lighter system than KDE first, though, to ease compile times and dependancy lists while you're learning how to do it.

I think your right, im not sure the download i got was particularly good, never mind, i downloaded mandrake 10. I am so impressed. People said it would be easy, i didnt realise it would be that easy. Its easier than setting up windows. It comes with everything you couldn need including softwre which can burn DVD's. PDF writing, everything. Its nearly at the stage where we dont need windows any more. Its a nice thought at least.
