cursor freezes

Using XP on a Dell Diminsion and a new mouse, my curser stops working if I leave it unattended. It has also happened 2x while I was working with the computer. It requires me to turn the computer off and on again to continue working. I played around with it to see if I could notice something on screen or audible but there is nothing noticeable.

Any help would be appreciated.
