Hi all,

We are installing a new W2K3 file server. I need to copy the data off the
old file server onto this new one and everything copies fine except the
roaming profiles. I keep getting access denied. What's up?

Thanks

Have you checked if you have permissions to the user profiles?
If you haven't set this policy in a GPO, then you most likely
haven't:

Computer Configuration - Administrative templates - System - User
profiles
"Add the Administrators security group to roaming user profiles"

I don't see that option in Windows 2000. Our current DC is Windows 2000.

Oops. Nevermind. I find that setting lurking under Logon. Let's see how it
likes me now!! Thanks for your help. :)

This only applies to new user profiles. How can I go about copying existing
profiles? I know that I can always take ownership of all the profiles to
force them to do my bidding but I'm really afraid this will hose all my end
users. Any thoughts on this one? Anyone?

After you've taken ownership of the folders, you can use CACLS to
modify the permissions of the user profile folders, if necessary.
Be sure to make a full backup before changing all permissions.
