I know how to burn playable CDs, but I would like to simply copy the .wma
files to a CD (as a backup).
What is the procedure in this case?

You simply create a data cd with the .wma file on it.

When I selected a folder full of .wma files and clicked "copy to CD,"
Windows Media Player opened with a "burn" list.
Inserting a blank CD also opens WMP.
Should I just do a "drag and drop" to merely copy the files, without
"converting" them?

Yes, but beware that dopping files in your CD writer just puts them in a
queue of sorts. There's something else you have to do to start the burn
process; I suspect it's "Write these files to disc" in the drive's
context menu.

I use Nero for stuff like this, which is why I don't know what I'm
talking about. :-)

Select the files you want, right-click on them and choose "Send To", and click the CD/DVD-RW drive.
