Windows 95/98/ME Convert HD disk NTFS to FAT

Programs such as Acronis Disk Director and Symantec-owned Powerquest partition Magic
have the option to convert between various file systems, but I have never used that
option in those programs, and am told the conversion from NTFS to FAT/FAT32 is less
than perfect and/or results in data loss. YMMV.

Do not try without a complete backup preferably via an image of your system, using
something like terabyteunlimited's Image for DOS, Acronis True Image, or Symantec's
Norton Ghost.

If the drive is empty, why are you looking for a conversion utility?

Use FDISK.EXE from a floppy boot to delete all partitions and non-DOS partitions,
then create a FAT or FAT32 partition or partitions (Say *Yes* to Large Disk Support
whenever you start FDISK, to enable FAT32), then format the partitions with
FORMAT.COM

Reboot between FDISK and FORMAT.

I thought FDISK could not change the NTFS to FAT.I want to install Win98 on
the drive.It was in a XP machine as a slave drive but will be in another
case as a master drive.

After following the instructions in Glen's links, you may need to
execute the following command to rewrite the XP master boot code with
Win98 boot code.

fdisk /mbr
