When you open the Control Panel, is the Common Tasks on the left? Is
there a darker blue line that reads "Control Panel"? If so, click it
and that might show the "Switch to .." option.

If the Common Tasks bar is missing, try this:

Line 78. Common Tasks View - Disable or Enable

All I get is a list of items in Classic mode.
Common tasks doesn;t show up.
I have looked at the reigisrty and group ploicy. It appears that I
have a registry enrty of ForceClassicControlPanel = 1

In the registy , there is one entry under Group policy, that shows
ForceClassicControlPanel=0.

I deleted all such entires and reboot. I still get the classic view
with no common tasks on the left,

If this shows up again, change it to

ForceClassicControlPanel = )

That should turn off the forced Classic CP.

When you clicked the "Enable" (Common Tasks view), did you save the .reg
file to the desktop, then double-click it to merge it in the registry?

Sorry, this should read:

ForceClassicControlPanel = 0

The zero turns it off.

On a machine that have category view and common tasks, there is no
forceclassicontrolpanel in the registry at all.

Correct! It does not exist by default, but added only when a Policy is set.
Ref: http://www.winxptutor.com/cpclassic.htm

The "ForceClassicControlPanel" value has to be deleted in order to switch Control Panel views.

In my case, the registry entry has been deleted in both places and I
still don't have the option to switch.

As far as I can tell, it isn't.

What's in the left pane? If not the Common Tasks, click the "x" to that
pane's top right and you should see the blue Common Tasks pane instead.

In addition:

Click Start, Run - Type "control folders" Press {ENTER}
Select "Show common tasks in folders"
Click OK.

Thanks for the posts, I can't get that to work.

I can get the category view by Start, settings, Control panel, then
right click and explore.

I can't get the Common Tasks at all.
