connect directly to another computer

i tried to create a new network connection but in advanced setup the
"connect directly to another computer" option is grayed. Also the same
option on my older desktop is OK with same wondows version. Can anyone
solve this problem.
i am using:
compaq laptop, windows xp professional with sp2
