What happen if you tap the F8 while the computer starting and select from
the Boot options:
Last good known settings which worked.

As Dave did the upgrade worked which i think it did since you had a problem
with updates.
Are you able to start in safe Mode?.
HTH.

I upgraded 12 months ago.I was doing a little housekeeping, defrag, deleting
unwanted files and programs to gain some space. when deleting an unwanted
program I got an error saying windows was closing to prevent damage. When it
rebooted I got the error mentioned. i tried using the xpdisk as arepair but
no go.

Hi,
Did you tried Last Good known Configurations that worked, by tapping the F8
and selecting from the Boot Options " last Good Known Configuration...."
You may deleted something belong to the System core which resulting in the
System halting and give you the error message, try to perform the upgrade
again with your Upgrade CD.
Good luck and Best wishes for the New Year.
