Computer Starting to Slowdown!!!?

My computer is approximately 2 months old and now has just recently
started to slow down after 3-4 hrs of use after each bootup. I have
scanned for viruses, malware/spyware, uninstalled unecessary programs,
defragmentized the hard drive, run diskcheck and cleared cookies and
temporary files from Internet Explorer. After a few hrs the system
slows down substantially thus making it difficult to browse the net
and switch inbetween programs.

I am currently running: Windows XP SP2 (with all updates), Pentium
Core Duo 2.4ghz, 2 Gigs of Ram, Norton Internet Security.

Any thoughts?

This is a Vista Newsgroup, not XP.

But, I still like XP!

Uninstall Norton, install Avast anti-virus free 4 home.

Yes. You're in the wrong newsgroup. This one's about Vista.
Seriously though, I know many people experience slowness when they use
Norton products on their PC. Try to disable NIS and see if you still see
the slow down after a couple of hours. If not, it's time to look for
alternatives for NIS.

get rid of norton internet security..it really uses so much
resourses..also it trys to find problems that are not there..its also a
pig to remove completely,, get AVG free a good spybot and thats all you
need if your using a router your have firewall on that..i used avg and
spybot and had no trouble at all. if you like the way norton works ie
internet security get pc chillin from trend micro..its better.

well steve,, i am just using avg free a good spyware remover and monitor
and windows firewall and as i said before i have had no probs been using
this setuup for 2 years ..AGV is exc,, scans my incoming and outgoing
e-mails and firewall does a good job. i had norton utilities and
internet security. long time ago .it took another 30 secs + to start.. i
do think internet security runs alot of instances in the background that
uses alot of memory and slows system down which is annoying.

No. Regardless of what operating system you run, there are four things you
need for security:

1. A firewall


2. Anti-virus software


3. Anti-spyware software


4. Care and vigilance.


Windows vista provides number 1, and part of number 3. The reason I say
"part" is because Windows Defender (the anti-spyware program), like
all anti-spyware programs is insufficient protection by itself. No
single product is good enough, and you need at least two or three for
good protection.


So you still need anti-spyware software, additional anti-spyware
protection, and nobody should ever rely solely on software protection
care and vigilance are always required.
