Computer Shuts Down During Windows Installation, New MB And CPU Installed

I just installed a new MB and CPU in my computer, and was re-running windows setup so windows would work with the new components, however at random times, the computer just powers off. I either have to wait 30 minutes to get it to power back on, or clear the CMOS. I'm thinking it's a temperature problem, b/c when I up the temperature cut-off, I get a little longer in the windows setup, but when I disable the temp cut-off, it still shuts down after being on for about 10 minutes. Any suggestions??

It's a MSI KM4M-V Socket A Motherboard and AMD Athlon XP3000+ CPU Barton Core 333FSB.

Any suggestions would be great..

Are you possibly overloading the power supply ??

That particular board won't draw much, I've used it a few times and its an excellent board, but usually when something like you described happens, you are bogging down the power supply with all kinds of extras. What wattage are you now using ? And how many things are plugged into it ?

I doubt that is the problem, on the basis that the only thing I changed was the cpu and motherboard out of the computer. I'm not sure of the wattage, it is a dell dimension 2400 case, still using 1 hard drive, and 2 cdroms (burner and regular) That's it. No other power anywhere's...

That board doesn't power down when the CPU overheats, it will beep first then go into a standby type state.

Do you have the extra 12v 4 pin connector plugged in so the CPU can draw power ?? Its on the left of the north bridge just under the CPU.

I will also assume you are using a stock retail fan on the CPU. If this is the case, it SHOULDN'T be overheating in that case, the 2400 series is a good size case with fairly good ventalation.

You might just have a bad board and might need to RMA it. It has happened to the best of us. I build usually around 200 PC's a year, I use a great source (NEW EGG) for all my parts, but still every once in a while, you get a bad board. As long as the place you bought it from has a good RMA policy, it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Also on a side note, if your gonna use a board with intergrated graphics, use the K7N2GM2-LSR from MSI, it sells for about $60 on newegg. While I have used the board you have now on a few machines, and I have a very high opinion of MSI (Microstar), I'm not much of a fan of the intergrated S3 graphics, I would rather use Nforce IGP any day over ANY other intergrated solution. But then, this is just a suggestion. :D

I'm still thinking this is a heat issue. Under PC Health, in the Bios, the computer says my cpu is sitting at 80 degrees celsius. Automatic cutoff is 90 degrees (highest setting before disabling). Computer only dies during high processor activity, ie windows install, and games. Installed the mb and cpu in my Windows ME system, and everything was going ok, until I ran Life in the ER game, game got about 3 minutes into booting, when the computer crapped out. After it shuts off, can barely even touch the heatsink on the CPU... Computer won't boot for about 10 minutes after the shut down.

So I guess my question is, why is my computer running so friggin hot?? I have a standard heatsink and fan, which I'm going to replace with a bigger one tomorrow. However is there anything else I might be overlooking?

WOW 80 huh ?? yup, thats pretty hot... I would guess maybe the fan is not spinning the way it is supposed to, or is not compatible with that CPU, those XP3000+ chips DO displace alot of heat, but with a temp THAT high, it has to be a faulty fan, or blocked air flow, and like I said, the 2400 case is a decent sized one, that cooling in it shouldn't be an issue at all.

Let me think here... if I remember correctly there is also a vent fan attached to the back of that case, could that possibly be touching the cpu fan and stopping it from spinning ?? Either way, you absolutely need a better fan, that is WAYY too hott

As for fans, could I recommend the Thermaltake TR2-M3, it should be PERFECT for that XP 3000+ chip.

I will check it out. However, I know the fan is spinning, which direction its moving air, not too sure. The dimension tower has a fan mounted on the back, which had a funnel from it to the heatsink for the celeron processor. I took all that out, seeings how the heatsink wouldn't work with this motherboard.

oh yea, and I know you mentioned the power supply, had a buddy let me borrow one he had extra, same deal...

As much as I hate to report this, better to do it, than to leave this thread un-answered. Took the heatsink off to get the computer ready for tomorrow, and what do you know, the compound was placed very poorly, and was only covering about 15% of the chip... Crap, redone it, and all of a sudden, CPU running at 55-60 degrees. Geezz... Sorry for all your trouble.... Just hope I didn't damage the CPU too much
