Computer shuts down during Windows Defender Scan

I am a new user to 8.1. I've found that when running a full scan with Windows Defender, the computer shuts down prior to completion. When I power the machine back on, the scan starts from where it left off. Is the machine actually going into a sleep mode? Does the sleep mode in 8.1 require you to hit the power button to "wake up"?


This seems like an issue if you need to adjust the power settings every time you need to run a scan.
