Computer shut down during reinstall

[adiralph]

Running DImension 3000. Niece reformatted hard drive and while XP was
reloading she shut down the computer.

All I get now is NTLDR is missing.

I have tried booting from floppy and cd-rom and I get the same message.
I also tried resetting the NVRAM and removing the battery inside to reset
things no luck.
I have verified the boot sequence in the Bios as well. Can't even boot into
safe mode.

Any thoughts?

If you set the setup cd in the cd drive, and the boot sequence is correct,
you should get a boot to setup. Nothing about restarting during setup should
prevent that. Keep trying to boot to cd.

The problem is she didn't restart she just shut down and never finished the
loading.

Yes, it would be hard to boot to setup cd if you never restart the system.

Start the reinstall process all over...format and reinstall Windows XP.

I can't when I try to start the computer with the cd it just gives me the
NTLDR is missing. It will not let me boot from any cd rom. I even tried a
98 strat up disk. No luck. I can't figure out how to get it to read the cd.

Is it possible when she shut down during the installation the drivers for
the CD were corrupted?

Not sure how to say it otherwise. The BIOS setting to boot to CD makes the
computer read the CD first. The hard drive has little to do with it till
setup copies some files to it. (including NTLDR). You either have a broken
BIOS setup, or a defective CD drive, since the 98 cd fails.

There are ways to 'flash' a bios to repair it.

Consider testing the drive on another machine.

Hi adiralph,

Have you actually *checked* the BIOS is set to boot from the CD
_first_?? If you are *not* *sure* how to gain access to your BIOS setup
then *refer* to your computer manual.

You have to set the boot order in the BIOS to let it boot from a CD.
How to get into your BIOS depends, not on Windows, but on what
motherboard/BIOS you have. As a matter of fact, you have to access the
BIOS before Windows even starts to boot. One common way is to press
the Del key when you first power on, but that's not necessarily right
for your computer. Watch the screen carefully when you first boot;
there's often a message there telling you what to do. If not, check
your system documentation or check with your vendor.

just try the Del key. There's a good chance that's correct for you.

Try this:

Changing Boot Sequence for the Current Boot
You can use this feature, for example, to restart your computer to a USB
device such as a floppy drive, memory key, or CD-RW drive.

NOTE: If you are booting to a USB floppy drive, you must first set the
floppy drive to OFF in system setup.

If you are booting to a USB device, connect the USB device to a USB
connector.


Turn on (or restart) your computer.


When F2 = Setup, F12 = Boot Menu appears in the upper-right corner of the
screen, press <F12>.


If you wait too long and the operating system logo appears, continue to wait
until you see the Microsoft Windows desktop. Then shut down your computer and
try again.

The Boot Device Menu appears, listing all available boot devices. Each
device has a number next to it.

At the bottom of the menu, enter the number of the device that is to be used
for the current boot only.


For example, if you are booting to a USB memory key, highlight USB Flash
Device and press <Enter>.

NOTE: To boot to a USB device, the device must be bootable. To make sure
that your device is bootable, check the device documentation.
