computer not recognizing headphones

so ive checked a few other questions relating to this one but the solutions haven't worked, the head phones don't show up at all in the playback device or recording devices, even when disabled devices are being shown. when I first got my windows 8 computer my headphones worked perfectly. now when I plug in my head phones the sound just continues to come out of my laptop's speakers.
