"Computer hangs" can be caused by many things (software or hardware)but
the first thing I would do is check your event viewer for any errors
(right click on "My Computer" and choose manage).

It can also be caused by spyware, you can try installing something like
ad-aware and run it to clean any spyware.

You can also check if any apps starting at boot time is causing that
problem, the way to do it is to run msconfig and on the startup tab just
uncheck all apps in there and reboot, if it still hangs then the problem
isn't there.

Corrupt system files can also cause boot problems, you can run sfc
/scannow to fix any corrupt system files. You'll need your windows xp
installation cd, it's possible to run it without it if you this folder
in your c drive I386 by modifying the registry.

Best of luck
